When asking parents to bring school party food?

As a parent, what do you expect the homeroom mom to do, call you and give choices (3 choices) of something to bring? Is that reasonable? (i.e. plates/napkins, fruit platter, cupcakes?) Or do you expect to just bring whatever you volunteer to bring?
